Air Connections
Granada airport is our first choice since it began offering international flights in 2005. Ryanair flies from London Stansted, Liverpool, Nottingham & East Midlands for example. Other airlines include Iberia, Air Europa and Vueling. Granada is a small airport and car rental booths are immediately outside Arrivals. Some firms will also meet you outside the Terminal and take you up the road to the local Granada Petrol Station to their own offices. If you want a small car, make sure to book before you go. A Clio or Punto is good for the small streets in our town but you may need something more powerful if you plan to tour the Alpujarras. Out of the airport head for the N323/E902 to Motril. It’s motorway/dual carriageway all the way to the coast and the road is being improved all the time. (If you use Google Map finder it is also marked as A44.) After about 45 minutes you will see the white sugar cube mountain of Salobreña . Turn right at the roundabout onto the N340 to Malaga and the Salobreña turn off isn’t far away. Malaga and Almeria airports also have all major airlines for your convenience as well as numerous low cost carriers such as easyJet, FlyBE and First Choice. Spanair continues to develop its services to Malaga from Copenhagen as well as an ever widening choice from Sterling and Skyeurope. At Malaga, if you’ve pre booked your car and the company is not located downstairs in the terminal then your name will probably appear on the touts’ board just outside the Arrivals exit. They’ll indicate that you need to turn left outside the doors, cross the road to a bay where a small bus takes you across the main road to your car hire firm. Once in the car, turn left outside these bank of firms, round the big roundabout towards Granada and you’re on your way. Take the N340 all the way to the Salobreña turn off. The journey takes about an hour or possibly longer in rush hour so leave plenty of time for your return journey. Almeria is another tiny airport and car hire is immediately by arrivals. Head straight for the N340 to Motril/Malaga. The first part has been very long and twisty in the past but they are developing the motorway to direct traffic away from the coastal resorts and thereby making the journey much shorter. In the meantime allow a good hour and a half if you get stuck behind a lorry in the early stages. Car HireBuses If you prefer not to hire a car, there are reliable bus services from Malaga, Granada and Almeria main bus stations to Salobreña. A frequent service operates between the main towns in Andalucia with connections to Granada, Almeria and Malaga as well as services to and from Madrid. Buses or taxis are the only form of public transport into the surrounding villages. The bus and coach services are operated by different companies. Most are based in the main bus terminal in the towns. (a visit to www.andalusia.com will provide you with timetables & details.) Tickets are usually purchased from the bus companies ticket sales window. The ticket reserves you a place on the bus and may also be your seat allocation. The bus driver usually checks tickets as passengers get on. You can pay the driver directly for short journeys or when hopping on between towns. In Salobreña the ticket booth is by the taxi rank downtown in Plaza de Goya opposite the Tourist Information Office. Our local bus does a circular route of the whole town and beach every hour. It stops up by our house in the next road. The bus stop is by Radio Salobreña. If you don't fancy walking down or using the car then you can use this for visits to the beach, shopping and so forth. |
